Rangitoto Island

Another highlight of my New Zealand trip was hiking up Rangitoto Island with Ben (even though we got a little lost and didn't start on the trail we planned). Rangitoto is an island created by volcanic activity about 600 years ago. The summit rises 260 metres (about 850 feet) above the Hauraki Gulf. It was really exciting to get to see the vast biodiversity on the island, which ranged from tropical rain forest to tundra-like, lichen-covered lava formations.
Again, I am going to apologize for so many pictures; I couldn't decide which ones to share!

The pier right off of the boat.

Various views along the trail.

The crater.

Me, overlooking the crater.

Gorgeous views from the summit.

Downtown Auckland from the summit.

At the top.

Climbing through the lava caves.
(The last pictures is my favorite)

Arriving back at the shore.

Having fun on the way back.

  3. You have an awesome smile I must say! That's a great achievement to hike there. Well done. I'd love to explore more places, it's just having the time and money!

  4. Such a cool adventure! And all in one day. How awesome. I went spelunking once, a couple of years ago, and loved it. It was so much fun, and I'd like to do it again. Your photos reminded me of when I did. And I haven't been to New Zealand--though it is on my list of places to visit someday--but I have been to Australia. I was so amazed with the landscapes while there, and I don't doubt I would feel the same with NZ. The water there is so much more blue than here in the States, it seems. From where you walked to, the view was so expansive and beautiful. My least favorite thing would have been the wind on the way back. ;)

  5. I am sure that was a great trip and the views are simply amazing! :) Love your blog! Would you like to follow each other? :)
